In this review, we will meet a representative of one of the older series of Cooler Master pc power supply – the V1000 Platinum. In total, it now contains 4 models with a capacity of 850, 1000, 1200 and 1300 watts. It is clear that 1000 W power supplies are usually purchased for specific tasks – for mining farms, for specialized test systems, for highly loaded systems for rendering, calculations, etc. The maximum operating air temperature for our power supply is 50 Β° C.

The length of the power supply case is about 200 mm, you will additionally need 15-20 mm for the supply of wires, therefore, during installation, you should count on an installation size of about 220 mm. Such models are not suitable for small-sized cases. There is no hybrid cooling mode, the fan rotates constantly. This has its advantages, especially in the case of a high-performance system that has been operating under high load for a long time.

The length of the wires to the connectors is designed for installing the power supply in large and tall cases, including full towers, and in open stands.

The distribution of the connectors along the power cords is quite successful, allowing you to fully provide power to components in several zones, even with a large number of installed devices. All the more, difficulties are unlikely in the case of a typical system. Separately, it is worth noting the use of straight rather than angular SATA connectors, which is much more convenient when connecting drives located on the base plane for the motherboard and in other similar places.

On the positive side, it is worth noting the use of exclusively ribbon wires to the connectors, which increases ease of assembly.

Circuit and cooling

The power supply is equipped with an active power factor corrector and has a fairly wide range of supply voltages from 100 to 240 volts. This ensures resistance to undervoltage in the power grid below the standard values.

High voltage semiconductor elements are located on two heat sinks, and a separate heat sink has a dual input diode assembly. The synchronous rectifier elements are located on the daughter PCB and are equipped with their own heat sink.

Cross-load characteristic

The next stage of instrumental testing is to build a cross-load characteristic (KNX) and represent it on a quarter-plane, limited by the maximum power on the 3.3 & 5 V bus on one side (along the ordinate) and the maximum power on the 12 V bus on the other (along the abscissa). At each point, the measured voltage value is indicated by a color marker depending on the deviation from the nominal value.

allows us to determine what level of load can be considered acceptable, especially on the + 12VDC channel, for the tested instance. In this case, the deviations of the effective voltage values ​​from the nominal on the + 12VDC channel do not exceed 2% in the entire power range, which is a very good result.

With a typical power distribution across the channels, deviations from the nominal value do not exceed 1% for + 3.3VDC and + 5VDC channels, and 2% for + 12VDC channels.

This PSU model is well suited for powerful modern systems due to the high practical load capacity of the + 12VDC channel.

The next test is designed to determine the maximum power that can be supplied through the appropriate connectors at a standardized voltage deviation of 3 or 5 percent of the nominal value.

In the case of a video card with a single power connector, the maximum power on the + 12VDC channel is at least 150 W with a deviation of within 3%.

In the case of a video card with two power connectors, when using one power cord, the maximum power on the + 12VDC channel is at least 250 W with a deviation of within 3%.

When loaded through the processor power connector, the maximum power on the + 12VDC channel is at least 250 W with a deviation of within 3%. This is quite enough for typical systems that have only one processor power connector on the motherboard.

Consumer qualities

The consumer qualities of Cooler Master V1000 Platinum are at a very good level. The load capacity of the + 12VDC channel of this PSU is high, which allows it to be used in powerful systems with several video cards, as well as in multiprocessor workstations. Acoustic ergonomics are definitely very decent, the noise level when working at power up to 400 W is really low. Above 500 watts, the noise becomes noticeable and unpleasant, but in real-world conditions, components that have this consumption will themselves produce significant noise. The length of the power supply wires is sufficient for most modern cases, besides, the wires are ribbon and completely removable.

Outcome

Cooler Master V1000 Platinum turned out to be quite balanced, without obvious flaws. It can be stated that this power supply unit is well suited to work in any systems of various capacities, including systems with two top video cards based on desktop platforms. Of course, this model is most suitable for use in workstations for various purposes.

The technical and operational characteristics of Cooler Master V1000 Platinum are at a high level, which is facilitated by the high load capacity of the + 12VDC channel, relatively high efficiency, low thermal load, a rolling bearing fan with a long service life, as well as the use of Japanese capacitors. It is possible to predict a sufficiently long service life of this model even at high loads and active operation.
